The field of 140 has been whittled down to two in this year’s Mass. Amateur Championship at Tedesco Country Club in Marblehead. Mark Souliotis, a 46-year-old out of Haverhill CC, will take on Mike Calef in the finals today in one more 36-hole grind.
Calef (Brockton CC) is a former professional who reclassified as an amateur player because his career took him in a different direction. I’m excited to see him play a little bit more, because I’ve heard from everyone that he’s been sharp and he hits the ball a long way. On the reachable par-4, sixth hole, Calef launched a 3-wood 270 yards uphill just in front of the green and got up-and-down for birdie to take a stranglehold on his semi-final match yesterday.
Souliotis is a consistent, steady player. I followed him yesterday extensively, and although he didn’t splash birdies around like he did on Wednesday, he didn’t really put himself out of position and made it hard for his opponent to land any deafening blows.
I’ve tried my hand in doing a voice-over for the second straight day. Maybe I’ll have to reach out to my former Emerson professors and classmates from the broadcast journalism side to give me some pointers.
